Prepare Now for 2024 ACA Open Enrollment
Affordable Care Act (ACA) Open Enrollment starts November 1 and runs through January 15, 2024. You should prepare now, so you have time to get the best plan for your healthcare and budgetary needs.
If you are enrolled in an ACA plan, you will get two letters by November 1:
- A letter from your health insurance company and
- A letter from the Marketplace®
Keep the letters in a safe place so you can use them if you want to compare plans.
⊕ Read our blog, 9 Reasons You Should Compare ACA Health Plans Each Year.
Your insurance company letter tells you:
- If your 2023 plan is available in 2024
- If the plan isn’t available next year, the letter will let you know if the insurer is offering a similar or alternate plan in your area
- Any changes to the plan for next year
- The 2024 premium, after any premium tax credit has been applied
- The Federal Poverty Level (FPL) Calculator used for 2024 has been updated. If you allow your plan to passively renew, the APTC may be removed or the calculation on the letter from the carrier may be inaccurate
The marketplace letter tells you:
- What you must do to get a premium tax credit for 2024
- You may have to send documents like tax or income information
- How to update your application to make sure you get the right savings
What the letters tell you
- Your 2024 coverage status
- Any changes in your health coverage
- Any changes to the financial help you get
- What plan, if any, you will be enrolled in if you do not act by December 15, 2023
- In some instances, you will not be automatically enrolled in a new plan for 2024
- You will have to pick a plan for yourself
Didn’t get the letters?
- If you didn’t get the letter from your insurance company, contact your health plan
- If you didn’t get the letter from the marketplace:
- Check your online account if you have one, to see if the letter is there
- If we enrolled you in your 2023 plan and your letter isn’t available in your account, call American Exchange and you can authorize us to obtain your letter
- Call Healthcare.gov at 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325)
Update your application and compare 2024 plans
Between November 1 – December 15, update your application online. Your coverage will begin January 1, 2024. If you enroll between after December 16-January 15, your coverage will begin February 1, 2024. If you live in a state with its own health insurance exchange, the dates could vary.
You really should compare plans even if your current plan is available.
Examples of plan changes for 2024
Plan availability in your area is a great reason to compare plans. A new plan may cost less or cover more than your current plan. Here are a few plan changes we are aware of for 2024:
- Cigna is expanding its ACA health plan offerings 15 counties in North Carolina (Healthcare Dive)
- Cigna is leaving the Missouri and Kansas markets for the 2024 plan year, as well as two counties in Arizona and two counties in Utah (Becker’s Payer Issues)
- Oscar will not offer individual ACA plans in California in 2024 (Becker’s Payer Issues)
