BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is expanding their coverage area for 2020, offering individual Marketplace plans in Memphis and Nashville for the first time in a couple of years. Other TN carriers such as Cigna, Oscar, and Ambetter are also expanding which proves that the individual market has stabilized. In fact, most carriers will be cutting their rates in the state, with BCBS of TN only expecting to raise rates 1.4% after cutting rates drastically in 2019.
The increase in competition across the state is good for everyone as it will help keep rates low, and it will give more options to Tennesseans that may have only had one carrier as an option in their area.
Our CEO, Bobby Huffaker, told Dave Flessner at the Times Free Press that he is “thrilled with the news (of the carrier expansion in Tennessee) as rates and competition are coming in favorable across the country. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and more specifically the individual subsidized and unsubsidized health insurance market has carved its place in the American healthcare system as can be seen by the rate filings and increased competition among private health insurance companies.”
