How new HRSA initiatives are reducing prescription drug costs and closing pharmacy access gaps for underserved communities

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is doubling down on its commitment to affordable medication access in 2025, announcing strategic investments that bolster the 340B Drug Pricing Program, rural pharmacy networks, and patient assistance services across the U.S.

These efforts aim to address rising drug costs, provider shortages, and health inequities by empowering local health centers and pharmacies to better serve low-income, uninsured, and rural populations.

What’s New from HRSA

  1. $90 Million for Rural Pharmacy Support

    • Funding expands access to essential medications by supporting operations at critical access hospitals, rural health clinics, and community pharmacies.

  2. 340B Strengthening & Oversight

    • HRSA is increasing its audit capacity and technical assistance to ensure eligible providers can stretch resources for underserved patients.

  3. Increased Transparency

    • New digital dashboards will make it easier to track 340B program performance, helping providers, partners, and policymakers understand impact and improve operations.

  4. Integrated Behavioral and Prescription Services

    • Initiatives also include support for integrating pharmacy services into mental health and substance use programs, a growing need in underserved regions.

Why It Matters

Prescription affordability remains one of the top barriers to medication adherence and positive health outcomes. By investing in 340B expansion and rural pharmacy innovation, HRSA is working to cut costs and improve access—but this also means new coordination, reporting, and eligibility tracking requirements for healthcare partners.
